Of all my works, these prints have made a particular spectacle at local events.

“I like your work but I don’t understand why you chose that… [the flag].”
.
“You’ve done great so far. I would avoid trying to make any political statements.”
.
“It’s better not to say anything at all and keep those thoughts private.”
.
In light of what seems like a never ending saga, it comes to life in my fractured chest over, and over again. It started with a 5 year old girl, learning to recite “liberty and justice for all,” while missing her father in uniform. Crossing her heart, every morning at 8 AM, to come home looking for letters from war.

As much as this flag has shaped my world,
Blinding and binding me,
Defining my borders, freedoms, and privileges,
My understanding of people I call friend,
I pledged that it is mine to hold.
.
Once you realize that everything is political —that the people who “don’t do politics” are missing the point completely —you can liberate yourself from this common attempt to scare you into silence. We talk of workplace politics, but your family, your community, your relationship with the earth and with yourself, are inherently (and I say this not as a bad word) political.

Policy, justice, equity, resource, action, pacifism or war: you make these choices every day. Through a veil that may be nation, culture, or class… we survive, support, and fight.
